Promethian and Faustian Presences in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Essay

Promethian and Faustian Presences in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

A myth can be defined, however loosely, as an answer to an otherwise unanswerable problem, in some cases due to the incomprehensibility of such an response. It may not be denied that Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) poses a number of such unfathomable questions, generally concerning what separates males from gods, and the level at which supposedly beneficial desire becomes mindless and destructive obsession. The very best alternative for an answer to these unanswerable queries comes in the form of resolutions in the fantasy of Faustus and the myth of Prometheus. Allusions to these myths happen to be blatantly apparent in the actions, reactions, and reflections from the protagonist, Victor Frankenstein. Specifically, Shelley's smooth incorporation of the myths of Faustus and Prometheus show up in Victor's reckless pursuit of forces not designed for mortal hands, and the chaotic retribution he received via such desire, which sooner or later led to his inevitable problem.

The myth of Faustus, written by Christopher Marlowe (1590); explains to the story of Dr . Johann Faustus, who have makes a pact with the satan Mephistophilis to acquire ultimate knowledge under the state that he surrender his being to the devil following twenty-five years. Faustus, of course , ignores the obligation gained with such electric power, and abuses his surprise for the entire 25 years till he seems to lose his spirit to Mephistophilis. The irony in this particular myth is the fact despite his vast knowledge, Faustus by no means realized the error of his ways, nor do he repent for what he previously done. Almost instantly, similarities among Dr . Frankenstein and Dr . Faustus happen to be clear: they are all became blinded and well guided by their personal ambitions. For one stage, Frankenstein actually admits both equally his rashness, irresponsibility and his stupidity concerning his plight, which is intentionally comparable to that of Faustus': "... We ardently desired the acquisition of knowledge... at this point my...
