Essay 1984: Proles

In the book " 1984” authored by George Orwell in 1948, the proles are offered as an impoverished, helpless and massive group. Nevertheless, they can be free, as opposed to the rest of Oceania. They can be not inspected by the Party on what they do and think; therefore the proles are the only ones capable to take Big oil down.

To begin with, the word ‘prole' has to be defined. The word progenie derives through the word proletarian which means ‘a citizen in the lowest class'. The publication 1984 identifies the proles the same. They are old, bad, working class people. The proles live in an left behind area which is barely maintained. The neighbourhoods are very dirty and so cause many illnesses. Furthermore, the proles which were mentioned happen to be described as " swollen, waddling women” and " aged bent beings shuffling along on splayed feet” (page 86) which makes clear they can be old, poor and shabby people. Also it is said that among the proles there are a lot of thieves, bandits and prostitutes. The proles have been described as very pessimistic and bad. Additionally , the Party won't see the proles as human beings, but as insignificant creatures whom must be stored under control by simply everybody; " the Get together taught the fact that proles had been natural inferiors who has to be kept in subjection, like animals. ” (page 74). The comparison / simile ‘like animals' which is used, causes the reader to make a vivid mental image of the proles. This makes the reader imagine the proles as soiled, uncivilized and nonhuman people. Concluding, the proles happen to be abandoned, wretched and impecunious and viewed as non-humans whom must be stored in subjection.

Even though the proles are seen as animals, their particular lives are significantly less affected by the Party than any other course. They have been referred to as the working category, but besides working they may have other affairs too: " Heavy physical work, the care of house and children, petty quarrels with friends, films, soccer, beer and, above all, betting filled up the...
